Benefits of French Doors with Side Windows

Can French Patio Doors Impact on Home Value

Installing French doors with sidelights can increase your home's value. They are an attractive feature to potential buyers, as they provide a stunning entrance, improve energy efficiency, and maximize the space and use of natural light. However, the exact increase in value will depend on factors such as the quality of materials used, the workmanship of the installation, and the overall condition of the home.

Cost Considerations For External French Doors

French door prices can vary significantly depending on factors such as materials and size. On average, homeowners can expect to spend more aluminium frames, whilst uPVC is a cost feective solution. Keep in mind that any bespoke customization or additional features like built-in blinds will further increase the cost.

It goes without saying, that the larger the door frame width the higher the cost. Our large french doors retail up to £3,649.00 but are of the highest quality and can be an ideal way to increase the value of your home.

Materials

Here at Vivid we stock French doors in a couple of materials;

We no longer stock timber french doors due to the increase in demand and supply of uPVC french doors and aluminium french doors. Wooden french doors require more ongoing maintainance than a uPVC french door or aluminium doors.

Colours

Without doubt our most popular doors are the Heritage range, which are manufactured as either black or grey French doors. These colours have had a surge in popularity in recent times, having been featured heavily in various lifestyle magazines. However, if a modern classic is what you are looking for, our crisp white finish will make the perfect French doors for you! Whichever option you choose, you'll be sure you're new doors will add the extra wow factor you're looking for.

Glazing

All our double glazed french doors are manufactured with either Laminated Security Double Glazing or Low E Toughened Glass. Low E coatings are thin, transparent layers of metal oxide applied to one of the glass surfaces within the double-glazed unit. The primary function of the Low E coating is to minimize heat transfer by reflecting heat back into the room.

This means that during winter, it helps to retain warmth inside the house, while in summer, it helps to reduce the amount of heat entering the building. The result is enhanced energy efficiency, lower energy bills, and a more comfortable living environment. Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that undergoes a special heat treatment process to increase its strength.

When compared to standard annealed glass, toughened glass is four to five times stronger. In the event of breakage, it shatters into small, relatively harmless granules, significantly reducing the risk of injury. All our french doors benefit from a range of these glazing options.

Questions about French Doors with Side Windows

Do I need planning permission to install french doors?

Planning permission is typically not required for installing French doors, as it often falls under "permitted development rights" for homeowners. However, there are certain situations where you might need planning permission:

  • If your property is a listed building, you'll likely need listed building consent.
  • If your home is in a conservation area, national park, or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there may be additional restrictions.
  • If your property has had its permitted development rights removed or altered via a planning condition or Article 4 Direction, you may need to apply for planning permission.
  • If the French doors will be facing a public highway and are less than two meters from the boundary, it may require planning permission.

To be certain whether you need permission for your specific situation, it's best to consult your local planning authority (LPA). They can provide accurate and up-to-date information on building regulations in your area, so you can make an informed decision on whether to install a set of double french doors.
