Why fit a Fire Door?

Fire doors are fitted for several important reasons, all of which contribute to the safety and protection of a building's occupants and the building itself.

One of the main reasons for fitting a fire door is fire containment. Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke within a building compared to a standard door. They act as a barrier, compartmentalizing the building into sections. This containment helps to limit the damage caused by fire and provides more time for occupants to evacuate the premises safely.

Another reason is to provide a safe means of escape for occupants during a fire. Fire rated doors are an integral part of a building's escape routes, such as corridors and stairwells, that need to remain protected from fire and smoke. By installing fire doors, the building's escape routes are maintained, allowing occupants to evacuate with minimal exposure to harmful smoke, flames and heat.

Fire doors also play a crucial role in protecting property and assets. By slowing down the spread of fire, these doors help limit the amount of damage caused to a building and its contents. This can reduce the financial burden of rebuilding and replacing lost assets after a fire.

4 Panel Fire Door Options

We have a wide range of 4 panel fire doors available in finishes such as oak and walnut or colours such as white, grey and the in-vogue black, to suit your individual style. If you are looking to finish the door yourself, you have the option to paint or varnish the door to match the style of your home.

Classic Design

The 4 panel design is timeless and elegant, with a nod to traditional or victorian architecture. The layout of the panels, typically with two smaller panels on top and two larger ones at the bottom, creates a balanced appearance. This classic 1930's door can seamlessly blend with various interior styles, from traditional to modern.

Decorative Panel Options

The panels themselves can be designed with various patterns or relief work to add depth and visual interest. Raised panels, flat panels or a recessed panel, and decorative mouldings can create a variety of appealing looks, catering to different design preferences.

Glazing Options

4 panel fire doors can also include glazed sections, which can be both practical and visually appealing, bringing a modern appearance to a 4 panel door and enhance the wood grain. Glazing can help bring natural light into a space, creating a more inviting atmosphere. Additionally, fire-rated glass can be used to maintain the door's safety standards while adding an aesthetic element.

Fire Door Construction

The construction of a fire rated door is a complex process that involves careful planning, selection of materials, and adherence to strict regulations to ensure that the door performs effectively in the event of a fire. Each fire door must meet certain features in order to pass certification.

Fire Door Materials

The core of a 4 panel fire door is crucial to its fire resistance capabilities. The most common core materials used in fire door construction include solid timber (also known as solid core), particleboard, mineral core and composite materials. These materials are specifically chosen for their ability to withstand high temperatures and slow down the spread of fire.

Door Frames

The door frame is an integral component of a fire door assembly. It must be made from suitable materials, such as steel or hardwood, which can maintain their structural integrity during a fire. Intumescent seals are installed around the perimeter edges of the door and within the frame. These seals expand when exposed to heat, sealing gaps and preventing the passage of smoke and fire.

Glazing

In cases where a fire door incorporates glass panels, it is essential to use fire-rated glass. This specialized glass is designed to resist heat and withstand high temperatures without breaking or allowing the passage of fire. Fire-rated glass is installed in the door using intumescent glazing tape or specialized glazing systems to maintain the door's fire resistance rating.

Hardware

A 4 panel fire door must be equipped with fire-rated hardware and accessories, such as hinges, door closers, locks, and handles. These components must be tested and certified for use in fire door assemblies to ensure they will not fail during a fire.

In addition to a solid core fire door, we do stock more budget friendly hollow core (lightweight) 4 panel doors. These hollow core doors are still 44mm thick, which means they are FD30 fire rated.

Bespoke and Made to Measure Options

If you can't find a suitable width or height, don't worry, we are able to offer bespoke sizes. Contact us with your requirements and we'll be able to quote you a price. Remember though, a lot of our fire doors can be trimmed on each edge - browse the lipping specification on our website for further information.
